Non-Destructive Asbestos Detection
A new paradigm in workplace and environmental safety.
“Currently, about 125 million people in the world are exposed to asbestos at the workplace. Approximately half of the deaths from occupational cancer are estimated to be caused by asbestos.”

The Challenge
Traditional asbestos testing presents significant technical limitations. The process is destructive, requiring physical samples to be cut and removed, which is slow, hazardous, and costly. This creates major bottlenecks in renovations, demolitions, and disaster recovery efforts.
In 2021, under the BRII Regulatory Technology (RegTech) Round, we were awarded funding to develop an innovative solution that could provide non-destructive, accurate, and immediate results, meeting stringent regulatory requirements.
Our Approach: Microwave Sensing & Machine Learning
Our solution combines two cutting-edge technologies. We use a handheld device to emit a low-power microwave signal into building materials and measure the response profile. The core of the system is a sophisticated machine learning model, trained on a reference library of lab-verified samples to learn the unique dielectric properties of asbestos-containing materials.

Process Timeline Comparison
Traditional Method
- 15 Mins: Sample collection (destructive)
- Hours: Transport sample to a certified lab
- Several Hours: Lab analysis and reporting
Total Time
~24 Hours
Our AI-Powered Method
- Under 2 Minutes*: On-site scan (non-destructive)
*Proven by our Proof of Concept (PoC) - Instant: Real-time AI analysis and results
Total Time
Under 2 Minutes
This technology fundamentally changes asbestos management. By reducing a process that takes up to 24 hours down to just two minutes, we provide significant safety and economic benefits. Instant and accurate identification enhances turnaround times for management planning and disposal, especially in disaster-affected areas.
For residential assessors, the device makes testing faster and more affordable, allowing structurally sound materials to remain intact and eliminating health risks to residents while a removal plan is formulated. The project's success has led to ongoing funding for a proof-of-concept phase throughout 2023-2024.
